somatic experiencing

You’ve done the talk therapy. You understand your trauma. But your body still doesn’t feel safe.

You understand your trauma story inside and out
You’ve journaled, meditated, and learned the tools

But the tension? The shutdown? The overthinking?

It’s still there.

If you’ve ever said “I get it, but I still feel like something is missing”, you're not alone. And you’re not doing it wrong. Most healing models miss one critical piece: the body

What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing® is a gentle, body-based approach to healing trauma and other stress disorders.  It is based on a multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics.

Instead of focusing on re-telling or analyzing the past, Somatic Experiencing® helps you notice the subtle sensations in your body that are tied to survival responses like fight, flight, or freeze and use clinical tools to gently shift through these survival states.

You don’t need to re-live your past. You don’t even need to remember it. We work with what’s happening now, what your body is still holding on to and guide it toward resolution.

The Science

Trauma can come from one single event or build up slowly over time from constant stress. No matter how it starts, trauma can make it really hard to feel balanced, safe, and resilient in your daily life.

It can be caused by many different things, including:

  • Sudden events like accidents, medical emergencies, or natural disasters

  • Difficult experiences like abuse, neglect, assault, or losing a loved one

  • Difficult environments like toxic workplaces or ongoing social and cultural inequalities

  • Inherited stress passed down through family generations (epigenetics)

The Bottom Line

If your body is overwhelmed by stress, it can trap you in a state of survival resulting in trauma and stress-related symptoms.

Fight or Fight Symptoms

Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, irritability, hypervigilance, overthinking, over-worrying, rumination, insomnia or difficulty falling/staying asleep, overworking, flashbacks, nightmares, tendency to avoid, need for control, perfectionism, constant fear, becoming easily startled, phobias, chest pain, heart palpitations, restlessness, trembling or shakiness, constant knot in throat, difficulty with trusting others, difficulty with focusing and concentrating, etc.

Freeze Symptoms

Depression, dissociation, brain fog, emotional or physical numbness, burnout, hopelessness, helplessness, feelings of weakness, inability to complete basic tasks, indecisiveness, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, people-pleasing, memory gaps, feeling empty, tendency to isolate, shutting down, forgetfulness, self-blame, feelings of shame, difficulty experiencing joy, fatigue, etc.

How Somatic Experiencing Works

Trauma can be understood as survival energy that remains trapped within the nervous system. When an overwhelming event occurs, the body's natural defensive instincts are often interrupted, leaving the physical response unresolved. This unresolved state is what frequently manifests as chronic anxiety, emotional exhaustion, or physical pain.

Somatic Experiencing®  functions as a gentle, structured framework to release this stored stress. By carefully guiding you to navigate difficult physical sensations and suppressed emotions at a manageable pace, we allow your nervous system to complete its natural recovery process and return to a state of healthy equilibrium.

What to Expect After Somatic Experiencing®

As we work together, here's what you'll start to notice:

  •  You stop bracing. You will notice you can actually sit back into a chair or let your shoulders drop without forcing yourself to do it. The physical tension you are used to carrying just stops showing up.

  • You get your energy back. If you have been feeling totally numb, heavy, or just checked out, that weight starts to lift. Waking up doesn't take as much effort, and you feel more like yourself again.

  • You have room to breathe. When something difficult happens, it won't instantly flood your system or make you panic. You will catch yourself pausing, taking a breath, and handling it without feeling overwhelmed.

  • You feel present. Instead of living entirely in your head or feeling disconnected from the room, you will feel steady and anchored right where you are.

  • Your body remembers how to rest. You will be able to sit still without feeling restless, and you will find it easier to genuinely relax and sleep.
